Position Summary Effective September 7th, 2021 all applicants must provide proof of full vaccination against Covid-19 (in the form of watermark receipts from the provincial portal) or provide written proof of a medical or religious reason for not being fully vaccinated as per the provincial direction as set out by the CMOH Directive 6. Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Charge Nurse is a resource for staff. The focus will be supporting staff and patients in a positive, proactive and professional manner while promoting a safe learning environment. The Charge Nurse will work in collaboration with the Clinical Managers and Clinicians to provide coaching, role modelling, support and clinical expertise for the team during day to day activities, and develop and coordinate team efforts to enhance positive patient outcomes and team work. The Charge Nurse acts as a resource for staff. In addition, the Charge Nurse will facilitate and sustains unit orientation for new hires, transfers and/or students and assist in evaluating the competencies and learning needs and progress of new hires, transfers and/or students to identify resources required to meet their learning needs. The charge nurse will also focus on fostering a warm, inclusive and positive work culture that promotes continuous quality improvement and staff engagement to achieve established clinical benchmarks and outcomes. Position Responsibilities Routine communication with internal and external key stakeholders in a calm, collaborative and professional manner In collaboration with the Clinical Manager, the Charge Nurse acts as a resource for staff by focusing on supporting staff, patients and the day to day unit operations while promoting a safe learning environment by, but not limited to: Supports BCHS Inter-professional Collaborative Practice (IPC) Philosophy in order to enhance team work and provide safe quality care Supports with the development of care plans for patients, follow through with identified goals on a daily basis, and where applicable baseline knowledge of all patients on the unit. Supports BCHS bed capacity plan to facilitate patient flow throughout the organization in accordance with funded beds, and engages in activities to enhance the patient experience as well as participation at Bed Meetings Promotes unit flow by utilizing a standard rounding tool to facilitate discussions and problem-solving regarding unit and staffing concerns. Supports a positive and inclusive environment that promotes continuous quality improvement and staff engagement to achieve established clinical benchmarks and outcomes Assists with monitoring and evaluating of clinical indicators, professional practice quality checks, and Required Organizational Practices (ROPs) related to their unit and/or program Promotes a professional practice environment by routinely mentoring and coaching staff to develop their clinical knowledge, skill and judgement and identifies learning opportunities to appropriate supports. Supports unit orientation for new hires, transfers and/or students Mandatory Qualifications Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario Minimum 2 years experience in Critical Care Nursing Successful completion of Critical Care Certificate Program or an equivalent Recent (within the last 4 years) experience in Critical Care Proven leadership experience Completion of a Preceptor program preferred Completion of Crucial Conversations would be considered an asset Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification Member of RNAO preferred Current knowledge of best practices and evidenced based informed research for critical care patients Mandatory Competencies Demonstrates professionalism and knowledge of nursing standards as outlined in the CNO, and related legislation requirements Demonstrated commitment to the vision and mission of the BCHS with proven skills in quality leadership Demonstrated ability to respond appropriately to an emergent or unexpected situation in a leadership capacity Proven ability to delegate and prioritize clinical, organizational, patient and staff tasks appropriately Demonstrates life-long learner Promotes and role models effective communication and feedback that is calm, respectful and professional at all times Proven conflict management skill and ability to facilitate difficult conversations Proven change agent Demonstrates excellent critical thinking, problem solving, conflict management, leadership and communication skills Demonstrates professionalism and knowledge of nursing standards as outlined in the CNO, including CNOs Three Factor Framework guideline, and related legislation requirements Flexible, proactive, self directed, and able to work effectively with minimal supervision, in a dynamic environment.
