Job Description

Working within our Energy Design Team you will play a key part within the team. Reporting to the Head of Design and Pre-Construction. You will be leading an established team delivering various schemes within the energy sector. Overall responsibility of the design deliverables within the SSE arena.

The Design Manager will liaise with the Design Leads, Project Teams, Internal and External Clients and supply chain, ensuring compliance to design scopes, CDM and relevant standards.


KEY RESULT AREAS/PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish and promote best practice in health, safety, sustainability, cost, time, buildability and appropriate quality matters.
  • Collate and promote strategic advice and knowledge associated with the designer’s processes and design management best practice.
  • Take a personal interest in identifying, coaching and developing key staff.
  • Promote use of engineering expertise and advice to add value to the process of design development.
  • Ensure all programmes, scopes and reports are updated and communicated regularly
  • Raise any design issues with Head of Design
  • Ensuring compliance with the CDM 2015 requirements, for both internal and external designers.
  • Oversee residual design risk management framework and oversee communication of residual design risks to risk owner.
  • Carry out other relevant duties as required from time to time.
  • Support, and where required, produce scoping documents with resource loaded programmes for Pre-Construction activities
  • Ensure appropriate pre-construction information is coordinated.
  • Ensuring compliance with design, construction, and safety standards as appropriate.
  • Liaison with customers over network design issues to ensure compliance with design and construction policies and standards.
  • Ensure projects are delivered in accordance with the scope, budget, and timescale requirements to the satisfaction of the client. Ensuring design team are fully utilised at all times.
  • Participation in reviews and updates of the current operational procedures and technical standards.
  • Offering consistently high customer service in interactions with customers via all communication channels; phone, email and occasionally face-to-face.
  • Acting as a role model within the Engineering Team and demonstrating coaching and mentoring for team members who are developing their careers within the industry.
  • Act as an escalation point for customer feedback when support is needed by team members.
  • Accurately recording & tracking projects across all workstreams using team trackers and systems.

  • Technical review of projects
  • Strong communication skills along with teamworking attributes.
  • Customer focused when dealing with customers, identifying their needs along with business development skills.
  • Development of external and internal relationships.
  • Undertake Principal Designer duties where appropriate.
  • Demonstrate a strong ability to communicate through sketching, drawing, presentations, and writing.
  • Checking own and others work providing feedback.
  • Understanding priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Produce as-built reports / drawings.


Person Specification

  • Master’s Degree qualified in relevant subject.
  • Experience working with IDNO's, DNO's or ICP's
  • Knowledge of DNO Drawing practices from LV up to 132kV
  • Commercial awareness
  • Solid understanding of engineering principles
  • Excellent knowledge of CDM
