Job Description

Interested applicants are required to complete the following on-line application to the attention of: The Recruitment Team. This temporary position is effective immediately and is until on or about June 30, 2025, extension is possible and based on funding. In compliance with Board policies and procedures, responsible for supervising the scheduling and tracking of workflow within Accounting Services and overseeing Accounting Services staff in the regular operations of the department, making sure that accounting processes and procedures comply with the standards set by the Public Sector Accounting Board, Ministry reporting requirements, government legislations, and external auditors. The York Region District School Board (YRDSB) supports a flexible working culture and currently provides the opportunity for employees to work from home in addition to working in the office for some positions. The YRDSB implemented Working From Home Guidelines to facilitate this work option. Please note, this does not apply for school based positions. Major Responsibilities To oversee the scheduling, coordination, and monitoring of workflow within Accounting Services to ensure that departmental deadlines are met, both internally and externally. To perform functions of the Manager of Accounting Services in their absence. To provide training and participate in the performance evaluation process of Accounting Services staff. To participate in the candidate screening and hiring process To review the accounting systems and procedures and recommend revisions for optimal efficiency. This includes developing strategies for process improvement, fixing errors in financial system generated reports, and coordinating the creation and maintenance of general ledger accounts. To contribute to evaluating, testing, and implementing new software processes and technical procedures. To review cheque requisitions to ensure proper approval, compliance with Board policies and procedures, and audit standards. To review vendor creations and vendor EFT additions and changes. To set up and upload various types of payments (wire payments, Government remittances, eTransfers, cheque-run files, assess and implement preauthorized withdrawals, etc.) and request issuance of Letters of Credit. To coordinate the receipt of quarterly levy payments and manage requests for Information from municipalities. To generate projections for cash flow and borrowing needs as necessary. To review and set up reconciliations, to monitor accounts payable / receivable ledgers, to respond to accounting-related inquiries from vendors, schools, and other departments, to prepare audit files, and liaise with external auditors during the mid-year and year-end processes. To attend and participate in various working groups and committees; lead workshops and training on the Board’s financial system as necessary To perform other duties as assigned. Line Of Responsibility Responsible to the Manager, Accounting Services. Education, Experience, And Qualifications A four-year university degree or college diploma in Accounting, Business Administration or a related discipline, or equivalent, as approved by the Board, is required. Minimum five years progressive business and accounting experience with some supervisory experience is required. Excellent organization skills, analytical skills and attention to detail. Demonstrated effective coordination, planning, decision making and problem solving skills. Effective verbal and written communication, time management, presentation, leadership and computer skills are required. Ability to deal effectively with a variety of individuals and groups both within and outside the Board is required. Important Information For CUPE 1734 Members LA.11.7 Those twelve (12) month employees filling vacancies as a result of their applying to a job posting are to remain twelve (12) months at their position. Ten (10) month employees are to remain in their position until the end of the school year. This requirement can be waived with permission from the Superintendent responsible for Human Resource Services. This does not prevent employees from applying for a position or from applying for a promotion during the twelve (12) month period. LA.7.4 Those transferred to positions not covered by this Agreement, will retain their seniority accumulated in the bargaining unit for a period of twelve (12) months, or up to twenty-four (24) months by mutual agreement of the parties, and if transferred back into the bargaining unit within the agreed upon period, they shall be credited with all previously accumulated seniority within CUPE 1734, provided that no bargaining unit employee who has completed his/her probationary period shall be displaced as a result of such transfer. Parties may jointly agree to extend past the 24 months upon mutual agreement between the Board, the Union and the Employee. As a condition of employment, successful candidates will be required to submit a current original Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) from the police jurisdiction in which they reside or an Enhanced Police Information Check (EPIC) through Sterling Backcheck prior to commencing employment with the Board. The PVSC and EPIC documents are only valid if issued within the last six months. Candidates are not advised to obtain this document prior to an offer of employment.
