Job Description

As part of the Child, Youth & Emerging Adult Program (CYEAP), Child, Youth and Family Services (CYFS) provides care and treatment to children and youth between the ages of 6 and 24. Clients and their families served by CYFS are offered specialized services and customized care across an inpatient, day treatment, and outpatient continuum of care. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is currently seeking a full-time, temporary (until September 5, 2025) Recreational Therapist. Reporting to the Senior Manager of CYFS, this role will support the CYU and its associated outpatient service within CYFS. The CYU serves youth who present with a concurrent disorder. Although the role has an inpatient focus, the Recreation Therapist will serve a continuum of integrated services, which include the day treatment and outpatient services. As a Recreation Therapist, you will work with the interdisciplinary team in an integrative and client-centered approach towards providing care to clients from diverse backgrounds. You will promote a holistic leisure lifestyle for clients addressing their social, physical, spiritual, emotional and cognitive needs. You will assist in developing, planning, facilitating, scheduling, organizing and implementing various therapeutic recreation programs by conducting assessments, developing individual recreation plans, completion of patient documentation, skill instruction, development of program goals and objectives, and the evaluation of a variety of individual and group recreation programs. You will contribute to maintaining a safe environment for youth and staff. You will be expected to contribute to program development and to the research and educational activities of the service. Candidates will support both students and volunteers. Ongoing professional development is available and is an expectation. The candidate will support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable regulatory requirements. Ability to work flexible hours on evenings/and or weekend is a requirement. The position is located at the Queen Street Site. The successful candidate will possess a Degree/Diploma in Recreation/Recreation Therapy or a Post Graduate Certificate in Recreation Therapy along with one (1) year of experience combined with a good working knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles and practices. Eligibility for Registration with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO) is required and membership, in good standing with TRO is preferred. Experience working as a Recreationist with clients who have an addiction and/or mental illness is preferred. Knowledge of addictions and mental health is essential. Knowledge of and experience with CBT and DBT, and a Motivational Interviewing certification are assets. You have a demonstrated ability in developing, organizing, and implementing leisure/recreation activities, and assessing leisure interests and abilities. You possess the ability to organize and supervise volunteers within the program. The incumbent must have the ability to run treatment-focused groups; access appropriate community supports; possess strong interpersonal and communications skills, and have the ability to deal effectively with a culturally diverse and complex clientele. The successful candidate must have the ability to work flexible hours, specifically some evening and weekend hours. Bilingualism (English/French) or proficiency in a second language would be an asset. All applicants offered and accepting employment must complete a Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check.
