Wellcome Collection is a free museum and library exploring health and human experience, where you can enjoy exhibitions, museum and library collections, public events, and a vibrant shop and café. We also publish books and online stories.

We are looking for two Exhibitions Registrars to join our team on a permanent basis. One is full-time, and the other part-time 4 days a week (0.8 FTE).

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

You will join the Registrars team, which manages and cares for the items we lend, borrow, and display so that they are accessible to the public. Your focus will be on loans in, working to deliver exhibitions as a core member of a project team, alongside colleagues from Curatorial, Production & Planning, and Conservation & Collections Care.

What will I be doing?

As an Exhibitions Registrar you will be accountable for loans-in to our exhibitions, long-term galleries, and touring programmes. This includes managing the loans process, from request, through to negotiation, contracting, shipping, insurance, install, display, and return. Taking responsibility for the legal and ethical risks of borrowing, you will ensure professional standards of collections care and management are followed.

The role will contribute towards the wider production of exhibitions, such as design, lighting, commissions, visitor experience, access and inclusion, display case layouts, mounting, framing, licencing, and image clearance. Alongside desk-based work, you can expect the role to be hands on, with practical object handling an important part of the job.

We are looking for someone who can:

  • Work in a flexible way with a variety of different internal and external stakeholders.

  • Balance good collections care and management alongside the need to produce an exhibition that is well designed, inclusive, and accessible.

  • Manage complex and changing information, while keeping an eye on the detail.

  • Be flexible and adapt to changing circumstances, even at late notice and when under pressure.

  • Take a risk-based approach to decision making.

  • Confidently undertake object handling, packing, and condition reporting of items from a range of different mediums.

Is this job for me?

You will be an experienced museum or gallery registrar with an excellent comprehension of exhibition production. With a commitment to making collections accessible, you will be considerate of the complex histories objects may hold and the diverse needs of our visitors. You should be a team player, who is keen to work in partnership with and open to support your colleagues.

We are looking for somebody who:

  • Has experience of exhibitions registration, with a proven ability to negotiate loan contracts.

  • Has worked with fine art transport agents, including for international shipments and tendering for exhibition transport.

  • Maintains a solid comprehension of fine art insurance and government indemnity.

  • Has experience of museum documentation and working with collections management databases.

  • Has worked with exhibition and lighting designers.

  • Has experience of working with living artists, ideally to produce new commissions.
