Job Description

We are working on an incredible opportunity for a leading Packaging manufacturing group who are now looking to appoint an experienced Operations Director.

As a member of the senior leadership team this role plays a crucial part in setting and delivering the business strategy across 3 of our client sites, located in Norfolk & Oxfordshire.

We are keen to speak with people working in an Operations Director role, however applications are invited from candidates who are currently working in an Operations Management position and now ready for the next step! Due to the nature of this role this is an on-site position travelling between all 3 sites accordingly, therefore a driving license and openness for travel is essential.


Main Responsibilities

A key responsibility will be for ensuring the factory operates in a safe and efficient manner with key consideration towards the health & safety of all colleagues on site (including contractors), quality, reliability, continuous improvement, environmental, and cost controls.

Acting as a role model and ensuring that colleagues are working towards achieving clearly defined objectives and targets whilst maintaining excellent factory relationships.


  • Develop and implement multi-skilling / cross-learning and productivity improvement activities.
  • Improving reliability and productivity.
  • Develop and maintain positive co-operation with local trade union representatives.
  • Recruit and develop top talent and instil effective teamwork with high levels of employee engagement.
  • Ensure effective performance assessments and personal development plans are in place.
  • Effectively plan and deliver plant performance targets to meet current and future customer requirements in terms of quality, volumes, and deadlines.
  • Plan and deliver maintenance and capital investment budgets for all plant, equipment, buildings, transport etc.
  • Plan and co-ordinate the use of external providers to support plant capability.
  • Direct and measure continuous improvement activities.
  • Implement OEE targets.
  • Lead and develop functional managers to maximise performance and efficiency.
  • Control and evaluate operational ratios.
  • Prepare investment and budget proposals, including product and process innovations.
  • Contribute to the discussion and decision-making process for the growth and development of the business.
  • Ensure the site's compliance to environmental and safety at work requirements, coordination with appropriate outside bodies etc where necessary.

Skills & Experience

We are keen to speak with candidates who have experience as outlined in this job description who are working for a packaging manufacturing business, however applications are invited from people from other manufacturing sectors, the successful candidate will:

  • Have the ability to make important business & budget decisions, have a practical working knowledge of legislations relating to people, H&S Quality & Environment.
  • Be a strategic thinker, looking at the bigger picture with a compliance mindset and a strong understanding of what customer service and product quality is and appreciates why it is necessary.
  • Have outstanding manufacturing and business knowledge gained within an FMCG/Packaging environment with experience of managing complex, multi-disciplinary teams.
  • You are a strong leader, target driven, resilient, tenacious and enthusiastic with a strong work ethic.
  • You are also a collaborative leader with a coaching style mindset, who leads from the front.
  • Solid understanding of Operations and Engineering.
  • It is desirable that you also have experience of supply chain, capacity planning, risk analysis/root cause analysis and an appreciation of bottleneck theory, modern manufacturing methods & trends.
  • It is also desirable that you understand lean manufacturing, have project management experience and have worked within a unionised environment.
  • Ideally degree Educated with Six Sigma Black Belt.

Remuneration
