Griffith Health Service
Are you a compassionate, experienced midwife looking for an exciting role in a supportive regional healthcare setting? We have an incredible opportunity for a dedicated Registered Midwife to join our team in Griffith, NSW. Come join not only a committed workforce but also a committed community.
Our Maternity Unit has 14 antenatal and postnatal beds, 2 birthing rooms and a special care nursery. We have close to 600 births per year and our midwives work collaboratively with obstetricians and multidisciplinary teams to provide woman centred care.
Griffith Base Hospital provides a 24/7 15 bed Emergency Department that supports both the township of Griffith and surrounding towns and villages both through referral and telehealth. The Emergency Department is supported by six bed Intensive Care Unit which is linked with specialists onsite and in referral hospital to ensure excellence in consumer care.
A diverse range of both inpatient, ambulatory, and outpatient services are provided within the facility by both Resident and visiting health professionals. Additional services including allied health, community services, pharmacy and Aboriginal health are available.
There are also a range of diagnostic services including Pathology, point of care testing and medical imaging are available. The hospital also has two functioning theatres within the operating suite in which staff perform emergency and elective cases daily.
The $250 million Griffith Base Hospital Redevelopment is now underway. This involves the planning, design and delivery of a hospital designed to meet the needs of Griffith and the surrounding communities both now and into the future. Find more information here
About the Role:
The Registered Midwife will work in partnership with women using a women centred approach to give them the necessary, support, care and advice during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postpartum period. This includes being able to identify complications and seek timely referral or consultation to the appropriate health care provider.

Key Responsibilities:
- A quality care framework that promotes positive health outcomes.
- Comprehensive assessment, establishing goals and developing a plan of care, provide and evaluate care and education, and ensure care is communicated and documented.
- Respecting the rights of individuals, their beliefs, cultural values and dignity.
- Analysing information and data, track and communicate outcomes as the basis for practice, and coordinating care as required.
- Collegial generosity in the context of mutual trust and respect that allows for the facilitation of safe transition to other care settings.
- Consulting and liaising with obstetric, medical and other appropriate care providers when deviation from the norm are identified.
- Where required, respond to emergency situations and deterioration of the woman/baby, escalating care as required.
- Effective therapeutic and professional relationships with the women and her family and the multidisciplinary team.
- Conduct births on the midwife’s own responsibility, and to provide care for the newborn and infant.
- Attendance and participation in regular care or service audits and reviews to ensure seamless delivery of quality care
- Provision of care and service across the days and hours upon which the unit / service operates and participate in the services on-call rosters
- Working within own scope of practice and seeking support where required.
- Delegation of midwifery care activity to registered nurses (RNs), enrolled nurses (ENs), Assistants in Nursing (AINs), Assistants in Midwifery (AIMs) and others according to their competence and within their scope of practice.
- Provide care and deliver services in accordance with the National Patient Safety and Quality Standards and ensure appropriate education and development of self as well as the supervision, mentoring and support for students, learners, novice's peers and others.
Midwives are accountable for their decisions, actions, behaviours and the responsibilities that are inherent in their nursing roles including documentation. Accountability cannot be delegated. The registered midwife who delegates activities to be undertaken by another person remains accountable for the decision to delegate, for monitoring the level of performance by the other person, and for evaluating the outcomes of what has been delegated.
Requirements:
- Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Registration (with) demonstrated evidence to meet the NMBA's Registered Midwife standards for practice (and) meet the NMBA approved standards, codes, guidelines and frameworks commensurate with the position.
