About the Role The Psychotherapy Educator will foster relationships with all trainee psychiatrists in the Network providing support to encourage high quality provision of psychotherapy training. The Psychotherapy Educator will meet with the trainees on a regular basis to discuss issues relevant to the psychological care of patients under their care. This may occur on a group or individual basis. This is not intended to replace the usual clinical management and supervision of these patients, which remains the responsibility of the treating psychiatrist and mental health team. Nor is it intended to replace psychotherapy supervision as mandated in RANZCP regulations.
The Psychotherapy Educator engages with trainees across Northern Sydney Local Heath District (NSLHD), Central Coast Local Heath District (CCLHD), Western Sydney Local Heath District (WSLHD) and Far West Local Heath District (FWLHD).
Purpose of the Position
The Psychotherapy Educator will support the Network Governance Committee in maintaining and improving the quality of psychiatry training within their network.

The Psychotherapy Educator will
  • keep themselves informed of relevant Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrist (RANZCP) policies
  • respond accordingly to any changes in those policies that affect psychotherapy training
  • support the provision of an education program within training sites of the Network
  • support opportunities for trainees to make formal presentations of their work in clinical meetings
  • assist the NDOT where possible in the formative and summative assessment of trainees according to RANZCP policies
  • liaise, as required, with any psychotherapy supervisors providing supervision to trainees within the Network
  • remain a key advocate for the education, training and skill development in psychotherapy for the psychiatry trainee
  • advise and advocate for maintenance of clear lines of accountability for patient care and safety for the trainee by a supervision input in group/ individual work; case presentations and discussions
These key accountabilities will be provided within the scope of clinical practice endorsed by the NSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC).

Selection Criteria

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or recognition as a specialist by the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them.
  3. Sound understanding of and demonstrated experience with, psychotherapy training requirements of the RANZCP; Commitment to and evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development and extensive experience as a Psychotherapist.
  4. Demonstrated high level skills in supervision and mental health education
  5. Sound understanding of the health system as it applies to mental health services in NSW
  6. Sound understanding of clinical education and training concepts and practices and their application in the health sector
  7. Sound knowledge of the evidence base for the effectiveness of psychotherapy; Understanding of, and commitment to, Occupational Health and Safety, Equal Employment Opportunity, ethical practices and the Ethnic Affairs Priority Statement
  8. Well-developed organisational skills, the ability to successfully manage competing issues and meet deadlines; strong problem solving, analytical and evaluation skills and experience
