Anaesthesia (General) Provisional Fellow, Nepean Hospital

Employment Type: Temporary Full Time (03-Feb-2025 to 01-Feb-2026)

The primary purpose of this role is to provide effective Anaesthetic services to patients under supervision, while developing expertise in Anaesthesia practice, in a complex clinical environment within inpatient and outpatient areas in the public health organisation. The position allows the development of skills required for independent practice and the opportunity to acquire subspecialist experience in a variety of areas. Non-clinical sessions are available for education, research and administration and leadership roles as appropriate.

The Provisional Fellow may be required to work at sites within NBMLHD including Nepean Hospital, Blue Mountains Hospital, Lithgow Hospital and Hawkesbury Hospital.

This position is suitable for Specialist IMGs assessed by ANZCA as partially comparable requiring a period of supervised practice.

What you'll be doing

  • Developing independent Anaesthetic Practice in preparation for completion of training.
  • Providing consultation, formulating plans, managing and prioritising care for complex and emergency patients.
  • Developing non clinical skills essential for practice as an Anaesthetic Consultant including trainee supervision, participation in quality assurance and administration activities and maintenance of appropriate Continuing Professional Development.
  • Participating in a rotating roster of day, evening and night shifts with overtime as required, with possibility of additional on call.
  • Providing emergency out of hours anaesthesia with remote supervision depending on case complexity.

Where you'll be working

  • Anaesthesia Department consisting of 70 Specialists and 26 Trainees.
  • Over 19 operating theatres performing approx. 15,000 procedures a year, covering all major surgical specialities with the exception of cardiac and major paediatric surgery.
  • Anaesthetic services are also provided to endoscopy, medical imaging (MRI and angio), cardiac catheterisation lab and the Pre Admission Clinic.
  • Obstetric anaesthesia is provided to the Delivery Suite (3,700 deliveries/year) on a 24 hour basis.

Essential requirements
  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  • Applicants who are not currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia must meet English language skills registration standard (medical) and attach evidence of this to their application.
  • Demonstrated clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in the last 2 years in a setting appropriate to the needs of the position.
  • Completion of four years of training with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (or equivalent) and intent to complete anaesthetic training with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (or equivalent).
  • This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent’s registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
  • Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
  • To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.

  7. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
