Job Description
NATURE OF WORK: This position is responsible for training and supervising a group of trainees in the vocational skills of building construction.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise and provide leadership to interns in construction skills training.
- Demonstrate skills and oversee intern's work on demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, insulation, finish carpentry, siding, concrete, and other related trades involved with the construction industry.
- Provide timely evaluations of intern's knowledge and skills in construction.
- Develop & apply approved standards, including daily project plans and on site procedures.
- Provide a safe workplace by delivering safety procedures training and ensuring the proper use of hand tools, power tools, and other related construction practices.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of all tools and equipment used in the shop and on the jobsite; ensure tools are in good working order and are safe to operate.
- Interface with sub-contractors and inspectors as requested by Housing Director.
- Assist in vocational counseling and development of trainee's skills.
- Serve as a mentor to students to develop successful construction and personal skills.
- Attend all staff meetings pertaining to intern related topics as directed.
- Assist in the scheduling, budgeting, and review of construction related housing projects.
- Seek to establish job placement sites for interns.
- Coordinate outside speakers for construction related development topics regularly throughout the year.
- Establish, meet deadlines and achieve program goals.
- Be able to complete and build a house turnkey if funding availability.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction and repair homes and other related buildings.
- Knowledge of mathematics such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, and how that relates to construction practices.
- Knowledge of current building related code requirements.
- Knowledge of other resources and how to acquire them.
- Skill in selecting and using appropriate instructional methods and procedures when new maintenance/construction practices are available.
- Skill in critical thinking relating to the identification of student strengths and weaknesses and the ability to come up with alternate solutions or conclusions.
- Ability to multitask effectively.
- Ability to demonstrate patience with interns and provide assistance in their growth.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the Housing Director, management, and home owners or other clients on all proposed projects.
- Ability to read blueprints, drawings, and specifications at a journeymen level.
- Ability to provide an educational training curriculum that will assure the success of students and their retaining of construction knowledge.
- Ability to mediate student conflict, confrontation and reconcile differences.
- Ability to provide the leadership needed to bring people together in order to complete tasks requiring teamwork.
- Ability to follow personnel policies.
- Ability to follow directions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Must have 10 years' construction experience which must include providing related customer service.
- Must have Journeymen carpenter status or the ability to perform at the Journeyman level.
- Must have experience leading others in the construction industry.
- Must have a valid Washington State driver's license and be insurable under the Nisqually Indian Tribe's insurance policy.
- Must be willing and able to work on all Nisqually Tribe owned properties which may include travel.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
