Job Summary
Serves as Chief Administrative Officer in the absence of Hospital Administrative Staff. The role is designed to interface with all departments in order to solve problems in the absence of Administration or appropriate management. Accountabilities
Makes rounds on all units to support nursing and help problem solve by coaching and mentoring Charge Nurses and staff RN's. Obtains report from the Charge Nurse on each unit regarding the following: staffing, hospital falls, AMA's, patient complaints, problems, etc. Coach and mentor Charge Nurses to help proactively solve problems.
Works with the Resource Staffing Department to help stabilize core staffing levels throughout the hospital.
Works with the Customer Service Department to resolve customer service related issues involving Nursing. Responds to and manages patient/family and physician complaints. Resolves immediate issues and documents incident and forwards information on to the appropriate individuals, i.e., Nurse Manager, Director of Nursing, Administrator on call, Risk Management, or Customer Service. Refers all inquiries of lost valuables to the Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse, Director of Nursing, etc. in their absence.
Works with an Administrator on call to resolve issues related to customer complaints, facility/intra-departmental issues, disaster management, etc. Coordinates bed management/diversion issues with the Administrator on call, Nursing Leadership, and the Patient Placement Coordinators.
Reviews all deaths for Medical Examiner/Coroner if appropriate. Reviews death certificates for completeness with appropriate follow-up as needed. Handles other related issues as needed (e.g., organ donation, autopsies, etc.)
Works with Employee Health and Infection Control to provide support in enforcing policies and procedures regarding patients and staff, i.e., blood body fluid exposure, TB screenings, etc.
Serves in the role of Planning Chief and temporary Incident Commander in the event of a disaster. Initiates the disaster beeper alert system.
Collaborates with and directs Security on miscellaneous issues, e.g., trespass notices, inclement weather, release of bodies, patient watches, etc. Works with Plant Operations and Engineering on facility issues such as power outages, water line ruptures, elevator stoppages, fires, inclement weather, etc.
Works with and assists Public Relations to meet the needs of the news media in regard to patient conditions and matters of public record.
Acts as a resource and support to Nursing Management regarding policies and procedures, i.e., drug diversion, fitness for duty, human resource issues, legal, clinical, MD issues, etc. Collaborates and coordinates with Administration and Risk Management to address sensitive legal and clinical situations in an appropriate manner consistent with hospital policies and procedures. Acts as a resource for screening and initiating the ethical consult process.
Manages critical personnel issues in the absence of appropriate management that need immediate attention such as fitness for duty, insubordination, sleeping on duty, theft, and possession of a firearm. Ensures employees are treated according to appropriate personnel policies. Incidences and actions taken to be documented and forwarded to the appropriate Manager, Director, and Administrator for follow-up.

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
3 years of Nursing experience required.
5 years of Nursing experience is preferred
Required Certifications/Registrations/Licenses
Current South Carolina R.N. License (Lawson Code NLRN)

In lieu of the BSN requirement above, a nursing diploma or an Associate's Degree in Nursing may be considered if the applicant signs a Memorandum of Understanding agreeing to enroll in an accredited BSN or MSN program within one year and obtain a BSN or MSN degree within four years.
