Job Summary

The City of Red Wing is currently seeking a qualified and experienced electrician to join the team! This position performs responsible skilled electrical work involved in the construction, installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of all electrical apparatus, some maintenance of traffic signals, maintenance and repair of street lighting, electronic and communications systems, instruments and equipment. The Master Electrician License will be used as the official "master of record" for the registered employer with the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry. Responsible for filing all electrical permits with the Department of Labor and Industry along with scheduling inspections with the authority having jurisdiction.
As an Electrician for our Public Works Department, you will be repairing and maintaining all electrical systems to water and wastewater industrial plants, ensuring electrical components at airport, waste campus, and all other City facilities are in proper working order and ensure all streetlights light the way for the community. Essential Job Functions

Day-to-Day:
  • Upgrade, maintain, and repair electrical systems and equipment related to essential portions of the City infrastructure.
  • Install street lighting in new development areas and maintain all city-owned street lighting.
  • Perform the construction, maintenance, and repair of receiving and transmitting apparatus, cables, boxes and auxiliary equipment.
  • Maintain and upgrade electrical systems at the Red Wing Airport including runway lighting.
  • Add and maintain electrical wiring and equipment in City buildings.
  • Add, maintain, and replace electrical systems in City Parks.
  • Plan, layout, and design of electrical installs.
  • Order of parts, materials, and tools needed for jobs.
  • Write electrical permits for work as required by law.
  • Conduct product research for repairs and updating of all electrical systems; provide quotes and permitting documentation.
  • Assist with Mapping and asset management.
  • Use a front-end loader skid loader, mini excavator, trencher, plow, forklift, dump truck, telehandler, aerial bucket truck, pot hole machine, and rigid pipe bending and threading tools along with manual tools to perform needed work.
Regularly:
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including snow removal.
  • Respond for on-call duty and respond to emergency call-outs as required.
  • Maintain equipment under 24-hour operation.
Experience, Education, Certifications, Physical Requirements

Experience Required: Minimum of four (4) years of experience as an Electrician.
Minimum Education Requirements: Two (2) year trade certification in Electrical Construction and Maintenance or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certification/License Requirements: Minnesota Master "A" Electrician's License. Valid Minnesota Class D driver's license or equivalent. Class A commercial driver's license is desired. Wisconsin Master Electrician license desired.
Physical Demands:
  • The work is heavy manual work.
  • Good color vision to distinguish between color wiring.
  • Work at heights and/or confined spaces.
  • Frequent exposure to seasonal temperature extremes.
  • Work around moving equipment requires caution as well as use of safety apparel.
  • Work may include intermittent lifting, pushing or pulling of over 60 pounds.
  • Must be domiciled within a forty (40) minute driving distance of their Primary Work Station.
  • Employee will be required to carry their City issued cell phone and respond as needed so that activities are not restricted when off duty.
  • Required to work in permit and non-permit confined spaces in the role of Entrant or Attendant.
  • Work entails high or dangerous work conditions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge
  • Current National Electrical Codes.
  • Current practices in the electrical trades, including safety practices, tools, and testing devices. Building codes, fire codes, and relevant ordinances as they pertain to electrical work.
  • Tools and maintenance of equipment used for various jobs.
  • Automation PLCs fiber optics and UPS systems.
  • Electrical print reading.
  • Safety rules and regulations to be used with hazards.
  • Thorough understanding of City's functions, policies, and procedures.
Skills
  • Strong written and oral communications and relational skills.

  • Follow and relay complex oral and written instructions, policies and procedures.
Abilities
  • Use smartphone, iPad, laptops, and computers using software such as Outlook, Cartograph, and RS Logix.

2 Network choices & 3 plan options.
The three plans we offer are $1,500 single/$3,000 family Deductible Plan with VEBA, $3,500 single/$7,000 family HDHP with HSA, $6,350 single/$12,700 family HDHP with HSA and City Paid AFLAC Accident Plan.
The City will make VEBA or HSA contributions, amount is depending on network and plan selected.

Participate in the City's Biometric Screening Incentive Program & save $20.84 per month for single plan and $31.25 per month for employee and spouse on medical premium. If participated in the screening you will receive an 8 hour wellness day that has to be used within the year.

Health Insurance Opt-Out Program
The City will pay $4,200 for the year to eligible individuals who have an alternative source of group health coverage that is not part of the City's group plan. The opt-out payment will be prorated for the balance of the plan year. You will receive $350 in the form of taxable income on the 1st pay period of each month.

City Paid Life Insurance - The Standard
The City provides $50,000 in basic life insurance & AD&D at no cost.

Vacation - A vacation bank of 40 hours, provided when hired, may be used for pre-approved time off during probation or upon completion of probation. Vacation accrual will start at the 6-month mark.

Tuition Reimbursement
Regular full and part time employees who have completed probation are eligible to apply for tuition reimbursement. The City will reimburse 100% of approved qualified education related expenses for approved educational courses to an annual maximum of $5,250 per calendar year. All courses must be pre-approved by the Department Head and Administrative Services.

Public Student Loan Forgiveness
