The function of the Interventional Radiology Technologist is to assist in the various invasive Angio, and interventional procedures performed in the Interventional Radiology Suite. Responsible for surgical scrub and circulation duties, performing total patient care during and post the procedure, while the patient is in the Interventional Radiology area.

Essential Functions: 1. Performs specialized radiography and fluoroscopic coverage of interventional and angiographic procedures under the direction of a physician. 2. Performs as a scrub assistant. Explains the procedure to the patient, identifies peripheral pulses, preps the patient for the procedure, scrubs and administers contrast media under the direction of a physician. Removes catheters/sheaths and applies direct pressure or clamp as appropriate and provides necessary report information to the Holding area or Nursing Unit as needed. 3. ""Circulates"" during the procedure, maintaining responsibility for patient comfort. Provides supplies necessary for diagnostic and therapeutic invasive procedures. Technologist may administer contrast media only under the direct supervision of a physician. 4. Records and processes hemodynamic reports, contrast media records and charges promptly and accurately. Enter patient data and send images to PACs. 5. Maintains room in clean and orderly condition. Promptly communicates equipment malfunctions to supervisor or Department Engineer for repairs. 6. Rotates call on a scheduled basis. Responsible for responding to call backs within thirty minutes and responsible for securing call substitutions during absences. 7. Keeps abreast of changes in the field of Radiology, attending in-services and departmental meetings. 8. Initiates and assists during emergency procedures as necessary. 9. Assists in maintaining JCAHO and QA requirements, hospital and departmental customer services goals and gives support to the team functions of the Interventional Radiology department. 10. Is authorized to obtain medication, radiopharmaceuticals, or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner, authorized/certified technologist, or registered nurse. Medications to include radioisotopes and contrast materials cannot be administered without appropriate clinical credentials, training, and certification to do so. Employees designated to ""obtain"" these items may also participate in the ordering and distribution of inventory. 11. Performs clerical duties as necessary: 1. Familiar with the procedures for sending and returning patients.
1. Schedules patient (in or out) for all procedures performed in the area. 2. Properly answers the phone. 3. Properly prepares paperwork. 4. Locates requisitions and previous images. 5. Properly codes and charges for supplies, equipment and procedures. 6. Maintains patient logs and other necessary records for Administrative Management. 7. Knows proper way to review images on PACS. 8. Performs other duties as assigned. 9. Maintains knowledge and skills required to work safely in an environment that can create significant exposure to blood borne pathogens and infectious disease. 10. Must use HIPPA protocol to access patient medical records. 11. Must use 2 identifiers and Patient Identification Form to ensure correct patient for correct exam. 12. Must work closely with peers in organized group dynamics to maintain department team function, plus occasional independent tasks. 13. Error in operating specialized equipment or failure to administer emergency procedures if needed could cause demise of patient. 14. Is authorized to participate in the ""time-out"" process (Universal Protocol) for verification of procedure.

Education: |
Graduate of an accredited two-year AMA and ARRT approved program in Radiologic Technology required. ARRT certification in Radiology and advanced registry from the ARRT in IR within one year of hire required, in addition to current CPR certification. At least one year in diagnostic and one year in Interventional Radiology preferred. Scrub, monitor and circulate cases to include emergency protocols. Level I technologist require competency in at least 90% of level I procedures, as outlined in attachment A.
