Job Description
**Job Title:** Sterile Processing Technologist
**Job Specialty:** Nursing - Sterile Processing
**Job Duration:** 13 weeks
**Shift:** Weekdays
**Guaranteed Hours:** 40 hours per week
**Experience:** 1 year experience in a healthcare environment preferred
**License:** Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
**Certifications:** Certification in Sterile Processing and/or Technology required through either the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HPSA)
**Must-Have:** COVID-19 vaccination and booster
**Job Description:**
- Responsible for all steps necessary for the proper decontamination, disinfection, sterilization, and packaging of instruments and equipment for operating rooms.
- Support decontamination, disinfection, sterilization, and packaging of instruments and equipment as needed for various services as workload permits.
- Completely and thoroughly disassemble instruments and equipment to ensure the removal of any debris, surgical soil, and bioburdens prior to sterilization or high-level disinfection.
- Perform multi-step procedures to effectively reprocess various instruments, including autoclaving.
- Perform and validate all cleaning of instruments using policies and procedures, manufacturers' instructions for use guidelines, along with the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) guidelines.
- Maintain records for all sterilization procedures that are processed, including interpretation of all biological monitoring, validation of monitoring results, and quality assurance checks to ensure sterilization parameters are met.
- Effectively communicate with providers and staff to problem-solve in the event of an instrument shortage and the need to substitute and/or offer alternatives.
- Verify that equipment functions properly, request equipment maintenance, repair, or replacement, and remove defective equipment.
- Maintain competency in sterilization reprocessing by return demonstration and participating in continuing education as requested.
- Assist in the training and certification of team members on sterilization processes as needed.
- Perform additional supply-handling duties for Specialty Care and Primary Care as time permits secondary to sterilization/reprocessing responsibilities.
- Product ordering and stocking
- Inventory checks
- Other basic inventory management functions as needed
Candidates should demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills, be task- and detail-oriented, self-motivated, possess ownership of project work, and have advanced hand-eye coordination and organizational skills. Knowledge of infection control, surgical instrumentation and care/cleaning, sterile techniques, and inventory management is preferred. Computer skills are essential.
