The Cath Lab Technician assists cardiologists and other healthcare professionals in performing diagnostic and interventional procedures, such as coronary angiograms, angioplasties, stent placements, and other catheter-based heart procedures. This role involves operating specialized equipment, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining sterile environments during procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
Assisting in Procedures:
- Assist in diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures such as coronary angiograms, angioplasty, catheter placements, stent placements, and other heart-related treatments.
- Set up and prepare the patient and equipment for the procedure.
- Help guide and support the physician with equipment during the procedure.
Equipment Management:
- Operate fluoroscopy and radiographic equipment to capture images of the heart and blood vessels.
- Maintain and troubleshoot cath lab equipment, ensuring it is functioning properly before, during, and after procedures.
- Ensure all medical imaging is clear and accurate for diagnostic purposes.
Patient Care:
- Monitor patients’ vital signs during procedures to ensure safety.
- Provide reassurance and support to patients before, during, and after the procedure.
- Assist in prepping the patient, including cleaning the skin, applying sterile drapes, and positioning.
- Prepare the necessary medications or contrast agents for the procedures under the direction of the physician.
Sterile Technique:
- Maintain a sterile environment and follow infection control protocols throughout the procedure.
- Assist with sterile draping and maintaining aseptic conditions in the procedure area.
Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and timely records of procedures performed, patient data, and equipment usage.
- Help document images, videos, and notes for the physician’s review.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with cardiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure efficient patient care.
- Provide technical and procedural information to the medical team and ensure smooth workflow in the cath lab.
Safety and Compliance:
- Follow all safety protocols, radiation protection guidelines, and infection control standards.
- Adhere to hospital policies, regulatory guidelines, and ethical practices.
Maintenance and Inventory:
- Ensure that all supplies and equipment are adequately stocked and maintained.
- Assist in the proper disposal of hazardous materials and contaminated equipment.
Continuing Education:
- Stay up to date with new techniques, technologies, and guidelines in cardiovascular care.
- Participate in ongoing education and certification programs as required.
Required Qualifications:
- Education:
- Associate’s degree in Cardiovascular Technology, Radiologic Technology, or a related field (Bachelor's degree may be preferred by some employers).
- Completion of a cardiovascular technologist program accredited by a recognized body (e.g., CAAHEP).
- Licensure/Certification:
- Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), or both (e.g., RCIS – Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications may be required.
- Experience:
- Prior experience working in a cath lab, hospital, or related clinical setting is preferred but not always required.
- Familiarity with imaging equipment, patient monitoring systems, and cardiac procedures.
Skills and Abilities:
- Technical Skills: Expertise in operating fluoroscopic and radiographic equipment, as well as familiarity with cardiac diagnostic procedures.
- Attention to Detail: Accuracy in performing technical procedures and documentation.
- Communication Skills: Ability to interact professionally with patients, doctors, and staff.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot equipment and assist in resolving issues quickly and efficiently.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for extended periods, lift heavy equipment, and assist in patient positioning.
