A Day in the Life in a Prison Healthcare Team:
As a Band 6 Nurse, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team providing high-quality, patient-centred care to individuals within the prison. You will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care, ensuring the physical and mental health needs of prisoners are met effectively and efficiently. The role involves working with patients who may have complex needs, including those with mental health issues, substance misuse, chronic conditions, and acute health problems.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
Conducting health assessments and triaging prisoners to ensure their health needs are appropriately managed.
Administering medications and providing clinical interventions as required.
Managing and supporting prisoners with long-term health conditions, acute illnesses, and mental health issues.
Supporting the delivery of primary care services, including general health assessments, wound care, and health promotion activities.
Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team including doctors, mental health professionals, and social workers to deliver comprehensive care.
Assisting with the development and implementation of care plans tailored to individual needs.
Providing education and support to prisoners regarding their health and well-being.
Ensuring the highest standards of clinical governance and compliance with healthcare policies and procedures.
Requirements and Qualifications:
Current and valid registration with the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) as a Registered Nurse (RGN or RMN).
Significant post-registration experience, preferably in a healthcare setting such as prisons, forensic, or community nursing.
Strong clinical skills and experience in managing complex care needs, including both physical and mental health conditions.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced, sometimes challenging environment.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with patients from diverse backgrounds.
Knowledge of prison healthcare protocols, safeguarding procedures, and risk management.
Understanding of the unique challenges faced by individuals in the criminal justice system and a commitment to promoting their health and well-being.
Desirable:
Experience in substance misuse, mental health, or forensic nursing.
Prison healthcare experience or experience working in secure settings.
Relevant post-registration qualifications (e.g., substance misuse, mental health nursing).
