POSITION: General Ledger Accountant - School

POSITION SUMMARY:
Working with the Town finance team, this position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the School's financial systems which includes but is not limited to the processing of day-to-day accounting transactions, general ledger account reconciliation, account analysis and reporting. The GL Accountant is responsible for integrating Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standard Board (GASB) requirements into the accounting process. This position works closely with the Town auditors and is responsible for preparing the necessary audit schedules. The GL Accountant is responsible for providing general services and support throughout the Town as assigned. This position interfaces with the general public, taxpayers, customers, outside agencies, employees and others on a daily basis and requires a commitment to the highest quality of customer service.
I. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. - Performs general accounting and reporting functions for governmental, enterprise, trust and agency, capital project, and special revenue funds.
- Participates in all aspects of the financial accounting cycle including but not limited to revenue, expenditure, reconciliation, conversion, financing, and fixed assets.
- Supports the month-end close process.
- Supports the annual Financial Audit and prepares necessary documents.
- Prepares MTP for reporting to the RI Division of Municipal Finance per submission deadlines.
- Prepares financial reports and analysis as required by school departments and others.
- Maintains chart of accounts.
- Responsible for reconciliation of school grants.
- Assists in the preparation of the annual budget and Capital Improvement Program (CIP).
- Responds to inquiries from taxpayers, the general public, the legal community, the School Committee, School Boards and Commissions, employees and others.
- Responsible for recording all activity in special revenue funds including interfund activity.
- Attends meetings, training sessions and re-certification programs when necessary.
- Provides support for other departments as assigned.
- Maintains a professional, friendly, and safe working environment.
- Performs other duties as may from time to time be assigned.
- Cross training on town and school responsibilities
- Demonstrated technical accounting knowledge, with an understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and government accounting standards.
- Demonstrated proficiency with standard office productivity software (Excel, Word, Power Point, database management and report writing tools).
- Must have the ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with co- workers, vendors, customers, and the general public.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Must possess problem solving and mathematical skills.
- Must possess the ability to maintain accurate and detailed records.
- Must possess the ability to implement strong organizational skills in order to meet deadlines, perform detail-oriented tasks and balance a variety of responsibilities.
- Must possess the ability to comprehend Town ordinances, state and federal laws relating to the operations and responsibilities of a municipal finance office.
- Must demonstrate a commitment to the highest quality of customer service.
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or other business-related discipline.
- 3-5 years of accounting and auditing experience.
- CPA/CMA or experience commensurate with professional certification, and a demonstrated commitment to continuing professional education required.
- Must successfully pass a background investigation.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to sit, use the computer keyboard and mouse, stand, walk, talk, or hear, use their hands to finger, handle or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms; is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and lift/move up to 25 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee must be able to work in an office environment where the noise level is usually moderate.

Personal computer and peripheral devices, calculator, cash register, copy machine, digital camera, telephone, telephone headset, and fax machine.
