At the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO), we independently investigate complaints about UK government departments, other public organisations and the NHS in England. We believe complaints have the power to reveal the truth, create lasting change and inspire a better relationship between people and public services.
Our vision is to be a voice for improvement in public services. However, we know that the experiences of individuals in accessing public services are not all equal. We need to embed clear equality objectives in institutional strategy to improve the accessibility of our own service and strengthen the impact of our work for all groups.
Based in the centre of Manchester and Westminster, our team of 600 dedicated people collaboratively work together to make voices heard. We are a modern, vibrant organisation. We put people first, whether that is our complainants or our colleagues. Join us as Senior Strategy Advisor, a new role within the organisation, where you can make your mark and improve the accessibility of our own service and strengthen the impact of our work to drive public service improvements. This role will specifically look to embed human rights and equality considerations into our strategy and help make further improvements to our service for underrepresented groups.
The role:
contributing to the development of strategies that underpin the organisations work
work proactively with external stakeholders to understand opportunities to strengthen our impact
supporting organisational projects
developing expertise in societal trends to make our service more accessible to different audiences.
The successful applicant will have:
an understanding of strategy development processes and methods or willingness to learn.
- experience of using data and insights to develop and implement strategy and policy
- an awareness of public administration (central government in particular) or the NHS and the context in which it operates.
We recognise the value of lived experience. If you have experience of complaining about any public body, we strongly encourage you to apply.
We know the value of having diverse, representative teams across our organisation. Which is why we particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented within the team. These include people who are:
Asian, Black, Mixed Ethnicity or another ethnic background
disabled
LGBTQ.
Benefits:
Civil Service Pension scheme (minimum 26.6% employer contribution)
32.5 days annual leave
hybrid working 40% office based
flexible working
access to a free, confidential Employee Assistance Programme offering 24/7 advice and support from professionals and counsellors

Inclusion & Wellbeing
Equality, diversity, inclusion, and wellbeing are vital to the way we work and our culture. We want our colleagues feel included, valued, and supported at work. It is essential that we are representative and accessible for the people who work here and those who use our service.
Actions we take to embed this include:
an anonymised shortlisting process to make sure it is fair and unbiased
monitoring the demographic trends in our workforce and making measured, sustained efforts to improve our diversity at all levels
providing wellbeing support and opportunities for personal and professional development for all colleagues
creating spaces for connection and engagement through our employee network groups and social clubs
engaging in regular inclusion learning to enhance the cultural competency of our organisation.
If you want to join a dedicated team that makes a real difference and helps raise standards in public services, then is the opportunity for you.
