Job Description
Job Purpose: Performs the analysis of biological samples to obtain accurate results which aid clinicians in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of clinical conditions. Key Output: • The position holder is responsible for the total staff compliment as per the organogram of the facility • Assisting management in the following operational needs, including but not limited to: ? Recruitment of staff ? Staff motivation, development and discipline • Monitoring the implementation of service levels and quality standards, including but not limited to: ? ISO 15189 ? Good Laboratory practices ? Lean practices ? Accreditation body requirements ? SHEQ requirements ? Turn-around time targets ? High quality of service delivery targets ? Investigation and resolution of customer complaints ? Cost Containment practices ? All laboratory processes ? Quality Control/Proficiency testing • Oversees all levels of laboratory accreditation requirements to meet organizational objectives, including but not limited to: ? Implementing required standards ? Document control ? Preparation for both internal and external assessments ? Maintenance of quality system ? Risk & opportunity assessments • Ensure and oversee that legislative and company specific Health and Safety standards are followed/adhered to, ensuring a safe working environment for all members of the facility. This is including, but not limited to: ? good housekeeping practices ? infection control measures ? correct waste disposal practices • Involved together with senior management in the evaluation and verification/validation of new equipment and methods ensuring standardization • Follows organizational policies for compliance to set standards • Generates management reports as required by senior management to monitor facility performances • Reports relevant incidents across disciplines impacting effective company operations to relevant line manager. • Solves relevant operational problems and actions accordingly • Overseeing and ensuring asset management, procurement and cost containment practices • Participates and oversees CPD (Continuing Professional Development) activities ensuring compliance and proof to the requirements set out by the relevant governing bodies’ • Attends and monitors training sessions/seminars/webinars/on-line training courses for skills development and compliance to regulatory bodies’ requirements • Identify staff training requirements, oversees supervision and training & competencies of new employees and evaluate staff performance continuously • Continually adheres to ethical professional conduct requirements as set out by the company and relevant professional bodies • Always setting patient care as first priority and representing the company by applying the standard rules of customer care in the medical pathology discipline by, including but not limited to: ? professional interactions with clients/doctors ? professional interactions with patients and hospital personnel • Performs the role as an independent Medical Technologist in accordance to the scope of practice should it be required for operational needs • Strictly adheres to all relevant Standard Operating Instructions and Working Instructions as drafted by the company • Strictly adheres to professional scope of practice and ethical conduct as a Medical Technologist • Authority in making decisions relating to Key Performance areas and delegated functions. (All financially impacted decisions to be liaised with line manager/pathologist) • Performs trend analysis, risk- & opportunity assessments for relevant situations and operational requirements. Point of Care testing, including but not limited to: • Assists in the total quality management of training and competency assessments of clinical staff, testing, review, quality assurance and proficiency testing activities • Attends appropriate meetings and training sessions as needed • Provides technical oversight for Point of Care testing activities • Maintains, troubleshoots and takes corrective action with equipment as needed • Liaise with ward staff, physicians, management and other relevant staff as needed to ensure effective operation of Point of Care testing • Travel to relevant POC sites if required and approved by Inc. management • Assists with maintaining inventory, supplies and procurement for the Point of Care testing • Communicate regularly with relevant stakeholders to relay problems or concerns Education requirements: • Relevant qualification as Clinical Pathology Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist. • Current registration in relevant category with HPCSA. Work Experience: Minimum 5 years relevant laboratory experience and general management experience. Competent in reviewing Haematology morphology slides and performing differential counts.
