Job Description

Job Purpose Responsible for operation, maintenance support (tier 2 and 3), satellite system link analysis, and integration of satellite communications systems. Duties and Responsibilities Perform tier 2 and 3 support to existing satellite communications links, including interrogating link analysis data to identify any link or satellite system performance issues. Assist on-ice operational personnel with any antenna or satellite system operations support needs. Identify, develop, or modify any satellite system maintenance or performance issues, including antenna operations or link performance to ensure optimal satellite link operation. Provide engineering services for satellite communications system designs, including developing and analyzing link budgets, system upgrades, and the design and integration of upgrades for new services and projects. Provide engineering and operational services for satellite monitoring and control systems, integral to the satellite communication system. Support other departments such as Information Security, Systems Architecture, USAP management, and the customer (NSF or their agents) as a subject matter expert. Review satellite systems for sparing and life cycle maintenance schedules, establishing tactical and strategic budgeting plans to meet life cycle replacement needs. Review satellite system, antenna, electronics, and maintenance schedules to ensure uninterrupted communications capabilities from stations and field camps. Provide engineering services in developing and reviewing satellite system designs and project documentation. Support Project Managers, technical writers, and other project staff members. Act as camp manager during an overland traverse to Black Island Transmitter Facility during the austral winter. Assist the RF communications team as required by the communications supervisor. Provide clear and concise reporting and documentation on satellite systems status at least weekly. Act as "smart hands" for other satellite communication-based infrastructures around the station. Work with the Manager, Supervisor, or Project Manager in Information Technology as a team member using Project Management methodology for engineering projects. Deploy to Antarctica or other locations for information gathering or to work as a team member, including site work in Antarctica for satellite system upgrades or installations. Design, assemble, test, deploy, and support mobile Satcom terminals as required. Provide engineering-level analysis or recommendations to ASC management and the NSF regarding satellite communications. Maintain a safe workplace, ensuring that safety is the highest priority. Perform all other duties as assigned. Qualifications U.S. citizenship or permanent residence is required. BS in Engineering, Communications Systems, or Satellite Systems preferred. Equivalent experience accepted in lieu of degree, with three years of diversified satellite engineering experience in design, system integration, operational support, and review required. An additional four years supporting and maintaining technical communication equipment in other RF communication fields such as HF, UHF/VHF, and microwave is preferred. Experience with Monitoring and Control (M&C) software is a plus. Competencies Technical Capacity Organizational Skills Strategic Thinking Problem Solving/Analysis Physical Requirements Deployment will be required. The individual must successfully complete physical and dental examinations as required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of the employment offer or other employment action. Comply with applicable safety, environment, health, and waste management policies and procedures. Must be capable of operating a standard desktop computer and able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds. All expenses paid while on-ice include meals, lodging, medical, gear, and travel to and from Antarctica. Candidate must be able to obtain a Public Trust Clearance.
