No Offer Description WE ARE The Joint Research Centre (JRC) provides independent, evidence-based knowledge and science, supporting EU policies to positively impact society. The current vacancy is with the Unit Economic and Financial Resilience of the Directorate for Fair and Sustainable Economy. The unit contributes to the development of European Union policies based on top-class research on economic and financial resilience. The unit provides scientific evidence to support policy making in the areas of macroeconomic surveillance and forecasting, modelling post-COVID and twin-transition economies; analysis of cross-border investments and multinational enterprises within strategic global value chains; wellbeing, fairness and resilience; sustainable and digital finance, financial stability. In support to the Economic Security agenda of the European Commission, the new colleague will contribute to develop research in the field of international economics, with special attention to changes in globalisation patterns of key supply chains, such as semiconductors and quantum. The new colleague will join the JRC Global Firms team, working on the statistical analysis of data on companies and/or products related to key technologies. WE OFFER A dynamic and multidisciplinary work environment, with a visible impact on policy and society in Europe and beyond; Close cooperation with policy Directorates-General in the European Commission on topics related to foreign direct investments, international trade and global value chains for key technologies such as semiconductors, or quantum; A role to act as science-to-policy interlocutors between the scientific community and policymakers. In particular, the new colleague will mainly have the following tasks: Manage large firm-level or product-level datasets, including extracting, segmenting, cleaning, systematising and aggregating data; the work also entails linking different datasets. Contribute to the unit’s work on strategic sectors/technologies, such as semiconductors or quantum. This entails the mapping and analysis of international enterprises, including their activity and corporate structures and the development of metrics of knowledge sharing based on, among others, patent data. Carry out statistical and econometric analysis for the purpose of informing and supporting EU policies; Contribute to drafting technical reports, research papers, and policy briefings. The position offers excellent opportunities to contribute to projects involving latest policy developments and entails frequent contacts with the relevant Directorates-General of the European Commission in Brussels and other JRC units. We look for a motivated research analyst with a solid background in statistics and applied micro-econometrics. Knowledge of economic theory should allow the new colleague to place the issues in the geopolitical context of policies affecting Economic Security and the allocation of resources in strategic sectors. Candidates must have ( essential ): A minimum of 3 years of research experience after the first degree giving access to doctoral studies; Background in Statistics, Economics or other relevant disciplines with strong skills in data handling, statistical analysis, and applied micro-econometrics, proven by a recent publication record and/or ongoing research in the areas of the call (international trade, global supply chains, key technologies); Experience in working with microdata on companies and/or products preferably in the areas of the call (international trade, global supply chains, key technologies) proven by a recent publication record and/or ongoing research; Knowledge of one or more standard statistical packages, including programming principles, such as: Stata, R, MATLAB; Thorough knowledge of spoken and written English (C1), including the ability to write technical and/or policy reports. The ideal candidate should have ( desirable ): Ph.D. or a minimum of 5 years of research experience after the first degree giving access to doctoral studies; Knowledge of network analysis and skills in modelling techniques; Knowledge of SQL; Familiarity with trade data sources and international trade policies. The candidate should also demonstrate: Commitment, motivation and proactivity in pursuing projects; Ability to work independently, including the effective management of own workload, as well as to work as a part of a team; Ability to identify and focus on the essential elements of issues and processes so as to achieve established goals efficiently; Ability to adapt to changing plans and priorities.
