This unit specializes in the care of hospitalist medicine patients with a focus on renal and a variety of other medical diagnoses. It serves as an alternative unit for gastrointestinal (GI), pulmonary, and other surgical/procedural patients covered by hospitalists. The current patient-to-nurse ratio is 1:5, with the goal of achieving a 1:4 ratio. All travelers are expected to float as needed depending on acuity demands. Travelers are required to work at least 1 holiday per season, including two winter holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year. Previous employees, either per diem or permanent, must be absent for a minimum of one year before returning as a traveler. The facility allows 5.5 hours for orientation modules and 2 hours for EPIC training for inpatient RNs. Modules must be completed within the first 24 hours of onboarding and can be completed pre-start or during orientation. Hours for modules vary based on the specialty. Modules are recorded by the facility and paid upon receipt of approved hours from the facility, generally occurring bi-weekly and being paid out in the second or third paycheck. Orientation consists of 24 non-billable hours.
